In this episode of Beyond the Waves we have Joseph Szukalski, a big air rider from England, proud representative of the Eleveight UK team. Joseph talks to us about his experience and dedication to this exciting sport, where he explores new limits and challenges.
Joseph has a very particular technique for considering a trick as mastered. Do you want to know what it is? I invite you to continue reading.
Q1. How and when did you discover your passion for kitesurfing?
"My passion for kitesurfing was sparked during a family holiday in Fuerteventura at Flag Beach. With my dad there for windsurfing and the conditions not cooperating, my mum decided to take a kitesurfing lesson. I was just five, but watching this captivating sport ignited a dream in me to be under the kite. For my 6th birthday, after plenty of persistence, I got my first 2m trainer kite. From there, I spent years kitelandboarding before transitioning to the water at age 12. My love for kiting has only grown, and I’m confident that as long as there’s wind, I’ll be out there chasing it."
Q2. What has been your most memorable experience so far in your sporting career?
"Taking 1st place in Division 2 at the PUKL Big Air competition was a major highlight and entering the GR8STONE big air competition opening doors and getting me noticed by amazing brands like KGUARD, Eleveight, ION, Revival Hydration, Sears, and Infinity Kitesurf Shop. Their support has been instrumental in fueling my journey and pushing me to new heights."
Q3. What are your goals now? What motivates you most about these new challenges?
"I’m committed to continuously pushing my limits, with double loops firmly on the horizon when conditions align. Competing internationally is also a key goal—I want to challenge myself against riders from around the world, drawing motivation from them to elevate my own skills."
Q4. Who have been your biggest influences or mentors throughout your career?
"My dad has been a constant source of encouragement, as have friends at the beach who share my passion."
Q5. What habits have helped you stay at the top level in your sport?
"I grew up studying kitesurfing DVDs, imitating the moves I saw. I still keep up with the sport’s evolution by following top riders on social media, always looking for new ways to push myself. Staying active off the water is just as important as time on it. I hit the gym, ride mountain bikes, and skateboard to keep in top form.
I’m also meticulous about nailing tricks—I make sure to land a move three times in a row before considering it “mastered,” which has consistently worked for me."
Q6. How do you handle the pressure when you are facing an important competition?
"I thrive under pressure by keeping my mindset consistent—every competition is just a series of short sessions. I focus on enjoying myself and staying out of my head. The pressure actually fuels my determination, helping me stick those critical landings."
Q7. What advice would you give to someone who is starting out in the world of surfing?
"Persistence is key—anyone can learn to kite, though some may take longer. Time on the water is crucial. I recommend practicing with a trainer kite in a variety of wind conditions to get a true feel for kite dynamics. On windless days, grab a skateboard to fine-tune your board skills."
Q8. What are the essential items that are never missing from your equipment when you train or compete?
"I’m always equipped with a range of Eleveight kites, my Stellar V1 board, and my go-to 60L KGUARD soft cube bag, which holds my ION wetsuit, harness, helmet, impact vest, Sears ear protection, and a Revival hydration drink for staying refreshed between heats and training sessions."
Q9. What do you think of KGUARD Premium Waterproof Designs products and brand?
"KGUARD’s products and brand are truly impressive, combining simplicity and functionality in a way that sets them apart. Their designs are incredibly intuitive, making the gear easy to use for anyone seeking equipment that performs without unnecessary complexity.
What really shines is their sustainability and durability—these products are built to withstand the toughest conditions of water sports, while still delivering consistent high-level performance. Having KGUARD gear as part of your setup offers reassurance, knowing you can count on it when you’re out there pushing your limits on the water."
Q10. What is your favorite KGUARD product? Why?
"The 60L KGUARD soft cube is a standout—its practical design lets me stand inside it to change out of my wetsuit when the ground is dirty. Plus, I can fill it with fresh water to rinse my gear, ensuring everything stays in prime condition."
Joseph shows us that there are many ways to improve your kitesurfing performance. Windy? Go kitesurfing. No wind? Go surfskatesurfing. Not sure about going out to sea? Try kitelandboarding. But you can't master a trick until you've done it perfectly three times in a row. Thank you, Joseph!
